7 Signs It Might Be AI
Updated weekly. Most of the advice you have heard is out of date. Counting fingers and looking for garbled text stopped working. Here is what to do instead, in the order that matters.
Stop the clock.
Every one of these needs you to act right now. A voice in trouble, an account about to close, an offer ending tonight. Urgency is the signal, before anything technical. Nothing real falls apart because you waited ten minutes.
Answer on a channel they did not pick.
Hang up and call the number you already have saved. Text the person directly. Never call back a number they gave you, and never continue in the app they sent you to.
Ask what only they would know.
A cloned voice can sound exactly like your grandson. It cannot tell you what you ate at the last family dinner. One specific question ends most of these calls.
Check the source, not the file.
Who posted it? Does that account have a history? Has any real news outlet reported it? Search the image itself to see if an older copy exists somewhere else with a different story attached. Ask the same about where it arrived. The ad at the top of your search results is not vetted, and scammers can pay to sit there. Read the small Ad or Sponsored label and scroll past those. A live video call is not proof of who you are talking to. Type the company or agency name in yourself, or use a number from a bill you already have.
Watch how money is requested.
Gift cards, wire transfers, crypto, payment apps and cash couriers are the tell. Real institutions do not ask this way, and those payments cannot be reversed once sent.
Treat labels as a hint, not proof.
Some files carry Content Credentials showing where they came from, and some AI images carry invisible watermarks. Both help. But a screenshot strips them, and missing labels prove nothing either way.
Look for things that do not hold together.
Shadows falling in different directions, a face that repeats in a crowd, jewelry melting into skin, a detail that changes between one frame and the next, a voice with no breathing or background noise. This is last on the list on purpose. It is the tell that gets weaker every month.
The one habit that matters most
Pick a family code word. One word, agreed in advance, never texted, never posted. If someone calls sounding like family, in trouble, asking for money, you ask for the word. Cloning a voice takes seconds of audio from a video anyone can find. This single habit defeats it.
If you are not sure
You are allowed to say: I am going to hang up and call you back. Then do it. Being wrong about a real call costs you an awkward moment. Being wrong about a fake one costs you your savings.
